ノルウェイの森 (Norwegian Wood) はノルウェイの森かというのを書きたかったのだけど，そこまでたどりつかなかった．
「wood = 森」というのはないよなぁ，と思っていたのだけどイギリス英語では普通に「wood = 森」らしい．
プーさんが遊んでいたのは the Hundred Acre Wood だ．
アメリカ英語では 森 = woods だ．
「トムソーヤの冒険」でも "You got to go all by yourself, to the middle of the woods," となっている．
アメリカで森の意味で wood と言うと，ちょっと古めかしい感じかな．逆にイギリスでは森の意味で woods とは言わない，と聞いたけれどどうだろう？
カナダ代表の「赤毛のアン」の最初の（ながぁぁぁい）文に出てくる．Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies' eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde's Hollow it was a quiet, well-conducted little stream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde's door without due regard for decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof.
もちろんビートルズはイギリス英語を話すので， Norwegian Wood が「ノルウェイの森」でも特に誤訳という訳ではないようだ．でもこのタイトルが何を指すのかは英語を母国語にする人でもよく判らないらしい．
ちょっとノルウェイの森から遠ざかったので，戻す意味で・・・
英訳にしろ和訳にしろ難しい．ダジャレみたいな物 ("I still 愛してる") は訳すのはほぼ不可能だし．これ（↓）も英訳するのは難しいね．
「私ね，ミドリって名前なの．それなのに全然緑色が似合わないの．変でしょ．そんなのひどいと思わない？ まるで呪われた人生じゃない，これじゃ．ねえ，私のお姉さん桃子っていうのよ．おかしくない？」
「それでお姉さんはピンク似合う？」
"My name's Midori," she said. "'Green.' But green looks terrible on me. Weird, huh? It's like I'm cursed, don't you think? My sister's names is Momoko: 'Peach Girl.'"
"Does she look good in pink?"
